The impact of UV radiation on car paint

We all know that UV rays are harmful to our cars. But have you ever wondered why?

In this short article, I will try to explain what UV rays are, how they affect your car's paint, and suggest what we can do about it.

So, first and foremost, UV radiation, also known as ultraviolet radiation, is electromagnetic radiation invisible to humans. Humans have learned to artificially generate UV, but we most often encounter it in the form of solar radiation, much of which is reflected and absorbed by layers of our atmosphere, and about 50% reaches us, providing us with warmth and several other benefits.

Okay, but what do the sun's rays, racing across 150 million kilometres, have to do with the car parked in your driveway? Everyone's familiar with the sight of a car that's completely lost its shine, its colour completely devoid of depth, and the owner just wants to get rid of it. It turns out that the main factor that significantly damages paint is the same one that damages and ages our skin—the well-known UV radiation.

A side effect of the radiation your car's paint receives is a rise in temperature. Rapid temperature changes cause the paint to compress and expand, leading to drastic degradation, altering the paint's shape, causing cracks, and, of course, fading. This is a sure-fire way to expose the components to corrosion and require repainting.

It sounds scary, but what can you do about it? There are several methods for protecting your vehicle from the serious effects of sun exposure. The most popular are:

  • Avoiding car exposure to radiation?
  • Car waxes
  • Ceramic coatings
  • Protective Films (PPF)

All of the above have their advantages and disadvantages. When choosing the right protection kit for your car, don't be afraid to seek expert advice. The vast majority of professional detailers will be happy to help you choose the right option and provide a quote.
